Two years ago, I did something I’d never done before: I started writing a sequel. The learning curve was steep at times, and I occasionally felt writing a sequel was harder than writing the original. The process was frequently stressful and difficult—which is perhaps appropriate for such a relentless, brutal book—and it was only late in the game that I truly got a handle on it.
But get a handle on it I did, and in some ways, writing my second novel almost feels like more of an accomplishment than writing the first. In any case, this phase of my career is over at last, and Rising Shadows, Sam Adams book two, is out now. Of course, all that really means is that I can focus all my energy on the already-in-progress book three, Mysterious Ways, tentatively scheduled for sometime next year. There’s still a very long way to go, but it’s coming along nicely.
